Dual-core/Triple-core/Quad-core - what to chose?

What should I really look for when looking at a new processor? My motherboard only supports AMD-cpu's. I can see that multi-threading of processes is clever, but on the other hand: Won't a 3GHz dual-core give me faster overall performance than a triple-core w. 2.3GHz? I'm confused - please help!

It depends on what applications you run.

If you run applications that have only a single thread, they will run faster with a CPU that has high clock speeds—the number of cores is irrelevant. On the other hand, if you have applications that can run two, three, or four threads simultaneously (applications in this category are quite rare), having multiple cores will cause them to run faster, even if the clock speed is lower.

Having multiple cores also allows you to run multiple applications at once, and helps prevent a single processor-hungry application from slowing the entire system (as long as it has fewer threads than you have cores).

Four cores at 2.3 GHz will do more work overall than two cores at 3.0 GHz, but individual threads will run faster on the two-core machine than on the four-core machine, because it has a faster clock.

So it all depends on what you run. If you run sophisticated applications that have multiple threads, the more cores you have, the faster things will run. If you run several different applications at once, they will run faster as a whole (but not necessarily individually) if you have more cores. If you just run one application that has only one or two threads, it will actually run faster on a dual-core with a fast clock than on a quad-core with a slower clock.
